The brief we hear most here
A tidy front kitchen that stays presentable, and a back kitchen that can take a wok burner, a steamer and daily frying without the oil reaching the lounge. Designing both at once — one doorway, one dishwasher, one walking route — is what makes the pair work. The detail is in second and wok kitchens.
The housing
Wide blocks of 1950s and 60s brick bungalows, some with the original kitchen still in place, plenty with a 1990s renovation now at the end of its life. Further from King Georges Road there are larger post-war homes and a scattering of knock-down rebuilds. Closer to the station, walk-up flats.
What that means practically:
Walls are rarely square. Cabinetry gets scribed and levelled rather than pushed into the gap. See custom cabinetry.
Kitchens are separate rooms. Usually with a dining room next door that is the obvious place for an island once the wall goes.
Switchboards are often original. An induction cooktop or a wok hob needs its own circuit, and the board gets checked before selections are signed.
Backyards are generous. Which is why an enclosed rear verandah or a covered outdoor cooking area is often the neatest place for the second kitchen.
Surfaces for high-heat cooking
Since the 2024 ban there is no engineered stone, and for this kind of cooking that is no great loss. Porcelain and sintered slabs, stainless steel and granite all tolerate heat, soy, vinegar and oil. Stainless steel is the honest answer for a back kitchen bench and splashback. Marble is not. See benchtops and splashbacks.
Extraction is the real upgrade
The thing that keeps cornices, curtains and ceilings clean is not the splashback — it is a hood with real capacity, sized to the burner, ducted outside on a short run, with a grease filter you can pull out and wash.

Questions people ask before they commit
Which council covers Beverly Hills?
Beverly Hills is split across a council boundary: part of the suburb sits in Georges River Council and part in Canterbury-Bankstown. Which one applies depends on your street, so confirm it before relying on any council-specific requirement for approvals or waste.
Can I add a wok kitchen to the back of the house?
Very often, yes — most commonly off the laundry or an enclosed rear verandah, where water, waste and an external wall already exist. The non-negotiables are extraction ducted outside, a properly sized gas line or electrical circuit, and licensed plumbing and electrical work.
Will opening the kitchen into the living room make the smell worse?
It can, which is exactly why the cooking that produces the oil should have its own room and its own extraction. Plenty of households here open the front kitchen up for space and light, and move the wok work to a back kitchen at the same time.
